Ziva Emtiyaz ~ The Story Behind the Name

People often ask me where my name comes from. I created this page to share the story behind Ziva Emtiyaz.
Once I was introduced to Middle Eastern dance, it quickly became one of my passions in life. The beauty of Arabic dance consumed me, and it grew to be a integral part of my identity. In my journey as a Raqs al Sharqi dancer, it was only natural that I find a name to represent myself as a performer.
It's not everyday that one gets to name them self. For me, it was tricky and even a little unusual. I decided to contact the people in my life that I felt knew me the best, and ask them each describe me in three words. I searched for translations for the words that came up the most. I wanted a name that would be unique and that described my dance style. I came up with a list of about seven names and shared them with someone I trusted: my first Belly dance instructor, Shoshanna. After examining my list, Shoshanna felt that one name stood out for me. Ziva, meaning bright and radiant, became my performer name.
As I continued to develop and grow as a dancer, the moment came when I needed to distinguish my identity even more. After much thought, the name "Emtiyaz" was given to me by Master Percussionist Souhail Kaspar. Being my Raqs al Sharqi coach and good friend, Souhail gave me an Arabic name that he he felt described my personality. He explained "Emtiyaz" as selected, more than special, or, a privilege. It was a privilege for me to receive such a beautiful name! Conjoined with Ziva, my name was complete!
And there you have the story behind the name: Ziva Emtiyaz!
